5. Making a Constantly Evolving CurriculumWun Hop Kuen Do prides itself on being a constantly-evolving, practical martial art. However, in recent years, practitioners have spread out around the world, and thus while individual WHKD stylists are continuing to innovate, the requirements (as laid out in the Redbook) have not kept pace. The Curriculum Development Committee seeks to rectify this through a continual revision process. Each year, an agenda will be set, based on the feedback of the entire WHKDIA committee. The committee will then seek out experts in the areas delineated by the agenda, and a draft version of changes will be made from these experts. This draft will undergo a series of revisions led by the committee, and then will be proposed to the Executive Board, GM Al Dacascos, and the Senior Council for approval. These revisions will be disseminated yearly to instructors current on their WHKDIA black belt dues, and a series of seminars will be established to pass on this knowledge to instructors and schools throughout the world. 2008-2009 Preliminary Agenda:
6. Developing New SchoolsCurrently, the biggest problem facing the future of Wun Hop Kuen Do is the lack of schools and clubs in North America. There are ample black belts but very few schools, which means new black belts aren’t being produced to continue this art in future generations. Currently, only two schools are registered on wunhopkuendo.net. Let us use this time to have a focused discussion about what the WHKDIA as an organization, as we as an Ohana, can do to help each other produce more active schools to ensure the continued health and growth of Wun Hop Kuen Do. 7. Keeping Rank IntegrityA common problem, and one that WHKD strives to avoid, is rank inflation and destruction of rank integrity. As a chronic issue in martial arts, let us have a focused discussion on any issues relating to promotions and rank integrity as an Ohana. 8. How is the WHKDIA run financially? The WHKDIA raises funds through annual student, instructor, and school dues. It is also the sole distributor of WHKD branded products. It uses these revenues to fund the website, subsidize black belt testing board travel fees, schedule and promote seminars, and generally promote the art around the world. A financial report for the WHKDIA will be presented at the meeting in Las Vegas for the 07-08 fiscal year, and will be followed by an open discussion of the organization’s financial operations. 9. What else would you like to see from the WHKDIA?The WHKDIA exists to serve the WHKD community. What would you like to see out of the organization? |
